Among the 33 different manifestations and 108 forms of Lokeswar, Avaloketeswara, known as Chengrechi or Chenrezig in Tibet, is the most popular one. Regarded as savior and protector from dangers, his six syllabled mantra (invocation) “Om Mani Padme Hum” has become so popular that it has been a household mantra for every buddhist in mahayana tradition, found inscribed on rocks, loose stone, prayer wheels, etc. Because he refused to accept nirvana considering such acceptance selfish in view of the ignorance of the great majority of the people who have not yet attained that stage, he is considered personification of infinite Karuna (compassion), hence also known as Compassion Buddha. His sacrifice of Nirvana to share mankind’s misery and willingness to help those in distress, has gained him highest respect among the Lokeswars. He holds in his hand the indestructible jewel.
