Amitabha, the most ancient Dhyani (meditating) Buddha is symbolic representation of cosmic element of sanjna (name/perception). Amitabha denotes “boundless light’ and devotees worship him for salvation. Red in colour originating from the red syllable HRIH, he exhibits samadhi mudra (contemplation) with his two palms folded face up one on top of the other lying on his lap, sometimes holding a patra (alms bowl) on the same posture. When represented on the stupa, he always faces the west. Pandara is his escort, peacock his vehicle and lotus his sign. He is said to be residing in the Sukhabhati Bhuwan (heaven of boundless happiness) in peaceful meditation.
